INGREDIENTS:

  • Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5-phosphate): Vitamin B6 in the form pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, is an important cofactor in serotonin synthesis, a neurotransmitter that has an important role in sleep. Serotonin is then converted to Melatonin which helps control your sleep and wake cycles.
  • Magnesium (as magnesium malate): Magnesium is a major factor in relaxing the smooth muscles within the blood vessels and affects circulating levels of norepinephrine and the synthesis of serotonin and nitric oxide. Magnesium increases GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid) production, which encourages relaxation as well as sleep.
  • Zinc (as L-monomethionine): Recent evidence suggests that zinc is involved in the regulation of sleep. A study of 890 healthy individuals found that those having the optimum hours of sleep per night (seven to nine hours) had the highest levels of zinc in their blood. Similar results were found in a later study where they tested zinc and copper levels in 126 adult women’s blood and hair, their results suggested that higher zinc and copper levels may be involved in sleep duration.
  • GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid): GABA (short for Gamma-Aminobutyric acid) is an important amino acid that plays a key role in your overall sleep health. One of the primary functions of GABA is, essentially, to help your brain power down for the night. This neurotransmitter slows down the communication between your brain and your central nervous system, helping you relax, de-stress, and ultimately, fall asleep.
  • Glycine: Glycine binds to glycine receptors in the brain, it inhibits the firing of neurons, allowing the mind to feel more at ease and become less responsive to certain stimuli. Glycine also promotes sleep by blocking receptors for the hormone orexin. Orexin is a peptide with a long history in our survival mechanisms. Orexin regulates wake and sleep cycles, mainly by maintaining arousal and helping us stay awake, alert, and attentive. People who have a deficiency in orexin often suffer from narcolepsy which is excessive sleepiness. Glycine actually prevents orexin neurons from firing essentially making this hormone inactive and preventing the wake-promoting actions. This might play a role in helping you sleep, another reason why supplemental glycine may be sleep promoting.
  • Hops (Humulus lupulus): Hops has a long history of being used to treat sleep issues. Hops has been well researched and known to work by modulating GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid) activity. This effect is due to its bitter resins, particularly a component called 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol. In addition, hops can also affect serotonin and melatonin, other key molecules in thesleep cycle regulation, further contributing to its sedative action.
  • Jujube Seed Extract (Zizyphus spinosa): Jujube Seed Extract has been shown to support individuals with an overactive mind to get a restful night of sleep by helping to calm the central nervous system. Jujube contains two types of phytochemicals,   saponins  and  flavonoids, which trigger changes to neurotransmitters, including GABA and serotonin, which can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. At least one of the saponins in jujube, jujuboside A, helps to quiet activity in the hippocampus region of the brain. And jujube contains a flavonoid compound, spinosin, which appears to trigger sleepiness through its effects on serotonin.
  • L-Theanine: L-Theanine in clinical studies have shown to induce a sense of calm in patients with anxiety and sleep disorders. L-Theanine does not act as a sedative, but it does significantly improve sleep quality.
  • 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), is an intermediate in the natural conversion of the essential amino acid, tryptophan, to serotonin. Clinical studies have shown that 5-HTP increases the amount and availability of serotonin produced by the body. Increased brain serotonin levels may produce positive effects on emotional well-being, appetite regulation, melatonin production and maintaining a healthy sleep cycle.
